Treaty to prioritise trade and culture
The Fiji Times Online, 31 March 2012

SUVA, FIJI: A framework treaty on traditional knowledge and expressions of culture was signed by the leaders of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) during the MSG Summit, held from 29-30 March 2012. The treaty had been agreed in principle at last year’s MSG leaders’ summit, and is an expression of MSG members’ aspirations to protect their traditional knowledge holders and owners against any infringement of their rights, and protect MSG expressions of culture against misappropriation, misuse and unlawful exploitation. The treaty further supports MSG member governments’ initiatives to implement national traditional knowledge laws, and calls for the establishment of a national competent authority, which will be responsible for the implementation of the treaty. In particular, the national competent authority will be entrusted with the tasks of awareness-raising, education, guidance, monitoring, registration, dispute resolution, enforcement and other activities related to the protection of traditional knowledge and expressions of culture.
