HAWAII, USA: Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is the shining star among the cornucopia of traditional medicinal plants. It has a long history of usage in traditional medicine in India and China. Ancient Indians have known the medicinal properties of turmeric, thus curcumin, for several millennia. In view of the enormous potential of curcumin in the prevention and therapy of a wide spectrum of diseases, in recent years, intense R&D activities have been undertaken throughout the world in various establishments, and a number of nanotechnology strategies have been used to improve its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy.
