CESRIKI Hosts Meeting to Develop Botswana IKS Policy

GABORONE, BOTSWANA: The University of Botswana Centre for Scientific Research, Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation (CESRIKI) in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology hosted a stakeholders meeting to develop the Botswana Indigenous Knowledge System (IKS) policy. Prof. Otlogetswe Totolo, Director of CESRIKI, explained that they are using a bottom-up approach: a team of experts interact with communities across the country; and communities’ indigenous knowledge will be used as the basis for developing the IKS policy. IKS project team leader Dr. Mogodisheng Sekhwela explained the process will include: information gathering from various indigenous knowledge holders, custodians and users; dialogue with the participation of all relevant stakeholders; and comprehensive consultations to define indigenous knowledge and its domains, and identify its holders, custodians and users.
