The result of the second session of Like Minded Countries meeting on the protection of genetic resources, traditional knowledge and folklore, Bali, Indonesia, 27-30 June 2011

BALI, INDONESIA: Approximately 80 participants from 17 Like Minded Countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and Caribbean, and international and non-governmental organizations attended the meeting of the Like Minded Countries on the protection of genetic resources, traditional knowledge and folklore, held from 27-30 June 2011, in Bali, Indonesia. The meeting resulted in the formulation of a common position for the Like Minded Countries in view of WIPO IGC-19, and adoption of the Bali Recommendation to advance the work of WIPO to establish an international legal instrument(s) on the effective protection of genetic resources, traditional cultural expressions, traditional knowledge and folklore. The recommendation, to be forwarded to WIPO IGC-19, calls for: holding a diplomatic conference in 2013; renewing the mandate of the IGC to continue text-based negotiations in order to reach agreement on an international legal instrument(s) and present it at the diplomatic conference; and holding an adequate number of special IGC meetings, in addition to the four regular sessions, in order to facilitate conclusion of negotiations. The meeting also produced three draft texts, on traditional cultural expressions, traditional knowledge, and genetic resources, which are under consideration by the Like Minded Countries, in preparation for WIPO IGC-19.
