WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore: Eighteenth Session

The IGC will continue its deliberations on the draft articles on the protection of traditional cultural expressions; the revised objectives and principles, and draft articles on the protection of traditional knowledge; and the draft objectives and principles, and options on intellectual property and genetic resources. The session will be preceded by the indigenous consultative forum, to be held on 8 May 2011. A panel of indigenous and local communities will be held on 9 May, under the theme: Indigenous Peoples’ Collective Rights and Intellectual Property. The panel will include presentations on: the collective rights of indigenous peoples: their conceptual foundations and implications, by UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Prof. James Anaya; the intellectual property regime and indigenous peoples’ rights: future challenges for indigenous peoples, by Estebancio Castro Diaz, Executive Secretary of the International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests; the art of integrating opposites, by Repeta Puna, Cook Islands; and “a calabash full of wisdom”: perspectives on collective rights over traditional knowledge in Africa, by Eliamani Isaya Laltaika, Tanzania Intellectual Property Rights Network.
