XIII World Forestry Congress
18 October – 23 October 2009 (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
The seven main themes of the World Forestry Congress include several topics of relevance to TK and indigenous and local communities: “forests and biodiversity,” including biodiversity contribution, economic aspects and benefit-sharing, management strategies in protected areas, and protected areas and community development; “producing for development,” including agroforestry systems and their economic, ecological, political, social and cultural influences, and traditional uses of non-wood forest products; and “forests in the service of people,” including forests and climate change, ecotourism and development opportunities for local communities, mountain forests and livelihoods, and valuation and benefit-sharing. A theme devoted to “people and forests in harmony” addresses issues related to indigenous peoples, communities and institutions, including traditional knowledge, social, cultural and spiritual values, territorial rights, and natural resource management models.
